The Secret Lives of Warm Grey

About this event

What if grey isn't the absence of color?

What if, inside every grey, there is a hidden world of violet, blue, green, rose, ochre and earth?

In this four-hour color exploration, we will look at grey not as a neutral endpoint, but as a beginning.

We’ll explore how colored greys can become the foundation for botanical painting through colored grisailles —underpinnings that establish the atmosphere and story of a flower before the final layers of color arrive.

A yellow flower might begin with a violet-grey.

A red flower might begin with a green-grey.

A purple flower might begin with a warm, earthy grey.

The grisaille becomes more than a map of light and dark.

It becomes the first whisper of color.

We’ll explore:

• Warm greys

• Violet, blue, green, rose and ochre greys

• Complementary color relationships

• How the underpinning influences the color that comes afterward

• How transparent layers can reveal the colors beneath

• How to see the hidden color inside what first appears neutral

The Secret Lives of Grey is about learning to look beneath the obvious—and discovering that even grey has a story to tell.
