COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Vermont-based horse rescue organization rescued ten horses from unsanitary conditions in Rensselaer County on Dec. 30. One horse was taken in on Monday and Dorset Equine Rescue welcomed the rest on Tuesday, with six receiving hospital care plus three placed in foster homes.  WRGB
  • Carina Dominguez (former WTEN reporter) left the station on New Year's Eve after more than two years with local news; she announced her departure on Instagram with a reflective final story.  Times Union
  • The Roundtable Panel holds its daily open discussion today (featuring Theresa Bourgeois, Judith Enck, Bill Hammond and Nic Rangel), as they cover issues in public policy and health. The session offers local insights into the news and beyond.  WAMC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New York State lawmakers Sen. John Liu and Assemblymember Charles Lavine proposed a bill to include lessons on the January 6 insurrection in public school social studies (the update will be guided by local Boards of Education and the State Education Department).  WRGB
  • UAlbany started a new 15-year partnership with Aramark on Jan. 1 by launching Great Dane Hospitality to upgrade campus dining with mobile ordering & data-driven menu changes. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNA tests confirmed that a large canid shot in Cherry Valley in 2021 was a wolf not a coyote. The animal is now on display at the State Museum (opened 2024) and DEC advises hunters to report any coyote-like canid over 50 pounds.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Albany Mayor Dr. Dorcey Applyrs said on Friday that she will keep looking for a city school for her daughters after her family’s lottery application was not accepted (WRGB). She stressed her understanding of the system and added that she plans to explore other options.  WRGB

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Chef Josh Coletto of Nighthawks in Troy showcased fresh, locally sourced ingredients on last Food Friday on Jan. 2, highlighting his method of cooking local meat, produce and vegan options. The show, hosted by Ray Graf, brought creative winter dining ideas to the community.  WAMC

  • Sports columnist Joyce Bassett outlined five simple ways to boost women’s sports in 2026 by urging fans to attend ACC games, follow sports news on Bluesky and Threads, read long-form articles, buy team merchandise, and reunite with former teammates.   • UAlbany football announced its hiring of three coordinators as head coach Tom Perkovich named Mike Wiand as offensive coordinator, Matthew Scott as defensive coordinator, and Keith Larson as special teams coordinator (each brings strong local success) to boost the team for upcoming games.  University at Albany
