- ➤ Rensselaer’s new City Dog Shelter (volunteer-run) opened Jan. 3 at the police department on Broadway. The facility offers temporary care for four dogs awaiting reunification or adoption and was partly built with a donation from Empire Generating Company. Times Union

- ➤ Albany International Airport set a 20-year record in 2025 with nearly 1.6 million departing passengers as holiday travel and new airline options spurred growth — officials say ongoing terminal upgrades will help meet rising demand. Times Union

- ➤ UAlbany switched its food provider from Sodexo to Aramark on Jan. 1, transferring union employees and keeping popular meal options while launching tech-free dining lounges (Take 15) in campus halls to encourage student connection. Times Union
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to service work, parking restrictions will be in effect on Lark Street and nearby areas (Hamilton Street, Second Avenue, South Street, Willett Street and Ontario Street) on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Additional restrictions will be enforced on Second Avenue on Jan. 8 (from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). WRGB

- ➤ UAlbany women's basketball won 74-62 on Saturday at Broadview Center in Albany — Delanie Hill scored 19 points with four teammates adding double-digit totals. The Great Danes will face Bryant on Saturday. University at Albany
- ➤ The UAlbany men’s basketball team fell short to UMass Lowell 83+71 in their opening conference game at the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex.
