COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Colonie is mourning Erin Couture, a cherished former school employee and wife to Shaker High School Dean Garrett Couture. The district will hold a half-day session on Thursday, Jan. 8 to support the Couture family.  NewsChannel 13
  • Chris Cueman and his family from Niskayuna are stranded in Puerto Rico after flight cancellations that affected many travelers during Operation Absolute Resolve. They plan to fly home Friday morning but face delays and depend on local neighbors for help + travel updates.  NewsChannel 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State investigators are examining the cause of a fire that damaged Unity House’s Kathryn Allen Building in Lansingburgh early Sunday; no injuries were reported and staff are relocating to the nonprofit’s main office downtown as plans are made to rebuild.  Times Union

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, Jan. 11, the Albany Institute of History & Art will screen the PBS documentary The Great Muslim American Road Trip (a 2022 film that follows a 3,000-mile journey along Route 66) during Muslim American Heritage Month; the event includes a live conversation with Executive Producer Jawaad Abdul Rahman.  WAMC
  • The annual Twelfth Night Celebration took place Saturday at Schuyler Mansion and Crailo State Historic Site, where reenactors, musicians, and volunteers marked the end of Christmastide with traditional food and period music (a nod to Dutch and English colonial customs).  Times Union
  • A Capital Region publishing company is fighting the rise of AI in children’s literature by creating new guidelines. It is working with local authors & educators to keep stories original for young readers.  Spotlight News
