COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 99-year-old Edna Mae-Davis Howard, known as the community grandma of Arbor Hill, was honored at City Hall on Wednesday by Mayor Dorcey Applyrs for her decades of service at Mount Olive Southern Missionary Baptist Church and as a pioneer at the state department. She remains active in supporting her neighborhood (especially children).  WAMC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nigerian-American designer Mo Rabiu — who repurposes scraps at her local tailoring shop — created Mayor Dorcey Applyrs’ cream suit with a tulip motif for her inauguration yesterday, marking a historic moment for Albany.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs plans to expand the Ambassadors program to boost downtown nightlife, using a model based on Schenectady's year-round service (a move to improve safety). Details are still in the works.  WAMC
  • Albany lawmakers met with residents at a town hall last Thursday to discuss a plan to revitalize Harriman Campus with a new $1.7 billion public health center and mixed-use development in uptown while locals raised concerns about parking and traffic affecting campus employees and nearby neighborhoods.  NewsChannel 13
  • A Scotia homeowner reported a broken utility pole that was damaged by a December windstorm, and after contacting CBS6 on Wednesday, National Grid fixed the hazard hours later (the fix came after media attention highlighted the delay).  WRGB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Albany County will close its Children’s Mental Health Clinic at 260 South Pearl St. due to long-standing staffing issues; the state Office of Mental Health confirmed this Thursday and said it will help recruit staff to avoid a lapse in care.  Times Union

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAlbany women's basketball lost a tight game to Binghamton last Thursday afternoon at the Events Center in Vestal - Binghamton won 63-61 after a strong first quarter from UAlbany. The Great Danes will face Vermont on Saturday, Jan. 17 for their next road game.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany men's basketball earned its second conference win on Thursday night against Binghamton at Broadview Center. Amir Lindsey led with 23 points and Coach Killings said the team is growing confident — gearing up for their next home game on Monday.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany’s Great Danes, reigning America East Champions, begin their 2025-26 indoor track and field season today at the Ramapo Season Opener after a record-breaking 2024-25 campaign with multiple school accomplishments plus a unanimous preseason poll win; they will also compete at upcoming meets including the Millrose Games and championships in Boston.  University at Albany
  • The University at Albany football program announced updates to its 2026 coaching staff today, retaining four experienced coaches + adding seven new ones, including offensive line coach Sean Pearson, as head coach Tom Perkovich expects the changes to boost season preparation.  University at Albany
