COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scouts celebrated their 10th anniversary event at Empire State Plaza on Saturday by hosting STEM education + community service activities. The event launched the new cookie season and raised awareness about food insecurity.  WRGB
  • Lisa Caporizzo, known for her animal rescue work, died Wednesday after a 10-week illness, her husband, former WTEN meteorologist Steve Caporizzo said. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home in Guilderland with a Mass on Thursday morning at St. Madeleine Sophie Church.  Times Union

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has awarded over $18 million in grants to support five water quality and climate resiliency projects across the region. The funding will rehabilitate Albany County spillways and upgrade systems in Cohoes, Columbia and Greene counties to protect local homes and infrastructure.  WRGB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Assemblyman Santabarbara introduced a bill to protect disabled students by requiring same-day parent notification when schools use physical restraint or isolation interventions following a recent incident in the Schenectady District. The measure calls for statewide documentation and independent review to strengthen accountability.  NewsChannel 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Albany Medical Center and Maria College are partnering to open a community clinic (at James J. Barba Physicians Pavilion) to serve patients needing follow-up care after hospital discharge while training Maria College nursing students. The clinic will open in the coming weeks.  NewsChannel 13

  • UAlbany women’s basketball team led until Vermont surged in the fourth quarter — winning 60-49 at Patrick Gym in Burlington. The Great Danes will return home to host Maine on Jan. 22 and New Hampshire on Jan. 24.  University at Albany
