COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, families filled Capital Hills when Kelly Maloney pushed her wife and daughter on a sled while their dog Charlie and another pup played in the snow; cloudy skies and a high of 29 degrees are forecast for Monday (Martin Luther King Day).  Times Union
  • The Capital District Area Labor Federation hosted its sixth annual MLK Service Day yesterday at the Regional Food Bank in Latham to sort food for residents facing poverty. The event honored Dr. King's message and strengthened community support.  WRGB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday night at 9:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a trailer park fire at 2460 Western Avenue in Guilderland and used the new county-wide decontamination unit to remove hazardous debris & clean equipment.  WRGB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Schenectady-based Marcella’s Appliance Center acquired Cocca’s Appliances in Colonie on Monday and will keep the 158 Railroad Ave. showroom open while remodeling and adding new systems — a move that blends Cocca’s family-run charm with Marcella’s growing operations.  Times Union

CULTURE NEWS

  • Monday’s march in Albany honored Dr. King’s legacy as the community, led by the city’s first black mayor, Dr. Dorcey Applyrs, came together with the Albany High School choir & local residents sharing memories and strengthening their commitment to diversity and inclusion.  WRGB
  • Latham native Nicole Zelka turned college rejections into a Broadway career by earning roles in national tours like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory overseas. She is now rehearsing for a Beetlejuice tour (her local theater roots fueled her journey).  Times Union

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bethlehem parents will present a petition at the Bethlehem Central School District board meeting on January 21 to stop the rezoning vote and restart the process (aiming to increase community input).  Spotlight News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A 24-inch water main broke near a business at 31 British American Blvd at 8 a.m. Monday, prompting a boil water advisory across most of Colonie; crews worked on repairs while local schools and businesses advised caution (the advisory will last two days after fixes).  NewsChannel 13

  • The UAlbany men’s basketball team beat Vermont 75+68 on Monday afternoon at Broadview Center in front of a packed crowd. The team will play the Black Bears in Orono on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.  University at Albany
