  • Genoa Importing closed permanently on Thursday due to rising costs and equipment glitches — it had served the community for over 35 years on Route 9 in Loudonville and will be fondly remembered by locals.  Times Union
  • Plug Power in Slingerlands postponed its shareholder vote on a proposal to double outstanding shares until Thursday, Feb. 5 (90% of voters approved but overall turnout fell short). The company said the change is needed to meet financial obligations.  Times Union

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from state and federal sources show the Capital Region’s unemployment rate stayed stable over the past decade except during the pandemic (2020 peak), with noticeable growth in government, health, and administrative sectors while recent graduates find it harder to secure entry-level roles. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Congressman Tonko visited Guilderland High School to honor student Daniel Joseph (winner of the 2025 Congressional App Challenge) for his innovative MedMate app that trains healthcare students. He presented Joseph with a Congressional Certificate of Achievement and a formal letter of recognition for his work.  WRGB

HEALTH NEWS

  • LaSalle School in Albany will open a regional youth support center later this year, funded by the New York State Department of Mental Health, to offer peer-led non-clinical supports including access to food, transportation, and social-emotional, vocational, and recreational resources to address mental health challenges among young people.  WAMC
  • Three heart patients and their families reunited with the doctors and nurses who saved their lives at St. Peter's Hospital during the third annual Heart Recovery Reunion on Friday. The event celebrated recovery and honored the dedicated care provided by hospital staff.  WRGB

  • On Food Friday, Jan. 30, Chef Wendy Grossman of Wendy's Vegetarian Kitchen shared plant-based cooking tips with host Ray Graf during a 2 p.m. call-in session. Grossman highlighted locally sourced, organic ingredients and her celebrated Nutty Cheese creation.  WAMC
