COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An Albany emergency shelter is preparing to serve more people during the weekend freeze. The shelter (on South Pearl Street) is at capacity with up to 300 people and will host a Super Bowl watch party with free food on Sunday.  NewsChannel 13
  • Jodi, a 6-year-old chihuahua mix from Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, will appear on the Puppy Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday — airing on Animal Planet — to raise awareness for adoptable senior dogs.  WAMC
  • Crystal Pratt experienced shopping difficulties at Walmart today when staff repeatedly asked her to leave because her service dog Bella was off‐leash despite valid documentation — Albany Police responded and stayed until she finished shopping.  WRGB
  • National Grid warns customers not to let scammers posing as company representatives pressure them into making immediate payments through wire transfers or prepaid cards. The company advises verifying identification (all employees carry a photo ID with the company logo) before sharing account details.  NewsChannel 13

  • Local fans gathered at Newbury Comics on Tuesday, Feb. 3 to hear Joji’s new album – his first studio record in over three years. Others joined online via Discord to connect over the music and celebrate community.  WAMC

  • SUNY Chancellor John King said campuses face a $10 billion repair backlog from old roofs, leaking pipes, and failing HVAC systems and is asking for $1 billion in extra funding (current allocation is $550 million annually) so the work does not take 20 years to complete.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are working swiftly to repair 53 water main breaks on Morris Road in Colonie as residents face water outages — officials expect service may be restored by sundown.  NewsChannel 13
  • Schenectady County will break ground this spring on the $125 million Capital Region Aquatic Center (146,825 sqft) that will include an Olympic-size 50-meter pool and training facilities for athletes and students. The project will use private donations and hotel tax revenue to support college programs and community events.  Times Union
  • K-9 Bruno retired after 11 years of service with Amsterdam Police; he joined in 2014 through community donations and partnered with Officer A.J. Fiorillo on patrol, search, and narcotics detection.  NewsChannel 13
  • Albany officials updated residents on ongoing snow removal after heavy snowfall as crews cleared over 23,000 cubic yards of snow by 208 employees & 12 contractors. Mayor Applyrs announced parking tickets issued on Jan. 27 will be waived with refunds issued, and urged residents to follow alternate parking rules.  NewsChannel 13

  • UAlbany men's track team performed well at the Scarlet Knights Open on Friday at NYC Armory. Jacob Smith broke a 14 year record with a 4:00.88 mile plus team members earned top three finishes and set 12 personal records ahead of the conference championship.  University at Albany
  • Debra Murray, longtime Guilderland tennis coach & physical education teacher, was recognized by the USTA Eastern Conference with the 2025 Virginia and Chuck Landis High School Coach of the Year award on Jan. 30. She has dedicated 27 years to empowering local student athletes through her coaching.  Times Union
  • At the Scarlet Knights Open Friday at the NYC Armory, Ivanna de la Cruz Flores set a freshman record in the 600m (1:36.43) while four other Great Danes ranked among the program’s top 10, showcasing a strong season for UAlbany’s women’s track team.  University at Albany
