COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York held Count and Go cookie events this past weekend at Mabey's in Rensselaer, where volunteers distributed over 17,500 cases. Cookie booths will open on Feb. 13 to support local troop programs + leadership training.  WRGB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albany High School hosted a spa day on Saturday where cosmetology, barber, and culinary students provided haircuts, beauty services, and treats ahead of Valentine's Day – all proceeds were returned to the school.  WRGB
  • Governor Hochul announced a new partnership among SUNY, CUNY and the Workers’ Compensation Board to help injured workers return to school through free college programs with support from Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors. The effort aims to boost workforce retraining and support economic growth.  NewsChannel 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Hochul has not opted in to the new federal tax credit program that would expand scholarship funding + tutoring for NY students, with officials waiting on detailed rules before the program begins in 2027.  Times Union
  • State government buildings will fly flags at half-staff Saturday to honor fallen corrections officer Charlie Hall, who died from a medical emergency. The gesture pays tribute to his service.  WRGB

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Albany Airport Fire Department hosted Cardiac Kids during Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week by offering equipment tours and hands-only CPR lessons. The event helped educate the community about congenital heart disease.  WRGB

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMass Lowell maintained control in the second half to win 58-45 at Kennedy Family Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon — Amaya Stewart scored a career-high 23 points as UAlbany fought to close the gap.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany men's basketball lost to UMass Lowell at Broadview Center Saturday night in a game that ended 89-79. Okeke recorded a double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) and the team will travel to Vestal to face Binghamton after a bye on Thursday.  University at Albany
