ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ New York officials marked the start of maple season on March 2, and syrup makers are looking forward to a strong sap run. Cornell Maple Program Co-Director Adam Wild said a gradual thaw (highs in the high 30s to low 40s with freezing nights) created ideal conditions for sweet syrup. WAMC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UAlbany students launched weather balloons last February as part of a national project to collect data for improving atmospheric river forecasts under their atmospheric science fieldwork course. The data will be shared with researchers to help refine weather models. University at Albany
- ➤ SUNY Chancellor John King said officials planned to address a $10 billion maintenance backlog with a capital plan spanning several years. Gov. Hochul’s budget proposal includes $595 million for critical maintenance next fiscal year + $460 million for research capital to support growing enrollment and boost the state economy. WAMC

- ➤ Residents on Mill Road report 4- to 5-inch potholes forcing daily slowdowns, and city crews have worked since last week to fill them temporarily until warmer weather allows permanent repairs. WRGB
- ➤ Town of Bethlehem Supervisor David VanLuven received the New York Association of Towns gold Town of Excellence award last week in Delmar, recognizing Bethlehem's leadership. Spotlight News
- ➤ Workers are repairing a leaking valve on 3rd St near Ontario Street as a water main break sends a large flow of water onto the street. Acting Albany Water Commissioner William Simcoe says repairs will begin soon once the affected section of the 36-inch feeder main is shut off. NewsChannel 13
