  • Entrepreneur Olivia Corazzine received a $35,000 grant from the town of Bethlehem for her upcoming women's clothing boutique. The grant — aimed at turning her business dream into reality — will help cover startup costs.  Spotlight News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifty-two high school students presented original research at UAlbany's High School Science Research Invitational Symposium on Wednesday, Feb. 25, showcasing projects from climate study to microplastics investigation and honing public speaking skills (beneficial for future studies).  University at Albany
  • Nobel Prize-winning chemist Omar Yaghi will return on April 2 to the Capital Region to visit Hudson Valley Community College in the morning and UAlbany in the afternoon; he will deliver a lecture and join a public discussion at UAlbany's Performing Arts Center at 3:30 p.m.  University at Albany

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UAlbany earned the Bronze Plastics Reduction Partner certification from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) on March 3 for reducing single-use plastics on campus. The university increased awareness, installed 70 water refill stations, and launched programs to cut plastic waste.  University at Albany

  • Albany City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar, an Iranian-American, is closely watching rising U.S.-Iran tensions as he worries for relatives and civilians caught in the conflict. He warned that while political shifts may occur, the situation could remain long and unpredictable — a reminder of his personal ties.  NewsChannel 13
  • 211 New York handled 2.1 million calls in 2025 from residents seeking food, housing and income help and now receives about $2.8 million for statewide services — which include 350 community specialists. CEO Therese Daly urged Governor Hochul to include the helpline in the Executive Budget for permanent funding.  WRGB

  • Slingerlands doctor Joanne Van Woert is expanding her practice — adding wellness programs to offer new health options for local patients. The move is set to meet growing community interest in proactive care.  Spotlight News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAlbany men's basketball ended its regular season with a 56-69 loss to Vermont at Patrick Gymnasium in Burlington. The team will play UMass Lowell in the America East tournament on Saturday, March 7.  University at Albany
  • At Albany County Hockey Facility, Capital District Sled Warriors practiced sled hockey on Sunday morning as players (including veteran Steve Pechacek and a young athlete) built their strength and teamwork. The session highlighted the team's camaraderie and positive spirit ahead of upcoming games.  WAMC
  • UAlbany athletics begin their spring season as men’s and women’s lacrosse, baseball, softball, track, rowing, golf, and basketball prepare for games and tournaments. The teams set schedules from March 11 (when lacrosse and softball host early contests) through May championships across campus and nearby venues.  University at Albany
  • The University at Albany women's golf team won first place at the Lady Bison Spring Invitational held at Hawkstone Country Club in Gainesville, Fla. — their team score was 18 strokes better than that of second-place finishers and coach Colleen Cashman praised the win as proof of strong winter practice.  University at Albany
