GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday, New York Attorney General Letitia James and attorneys general from 20 other states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to stop plans to fire nearly half of the Education Department staff after a March 11 announcement. The suit argues that reducing the agency without Congress is illegal and will harm millions of students who depend on its programs — a move to dismantle a vital federal service. WRGB
- ➤ Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Pine Hills Land Authority officials signed off on the transfer of the former College of Saint Rose campus covering 27 acres, marking a key step to revitalize the site. The county will soon move key services there—long-term plans include affordable and senior housing, community spaces, and a $6 million fund for security and upkeep while renovation details remain uncertain. - ➤ A new study funded by the American Rescue Plan Act finds that Troy's fire department is short on staff and getting more calls. Mayor Mantello will create a 90-day task force — with union members and fire leaders — to fix staffing problems and plan a new fire station to replace the old one in Lansingburgh. WAMC
- ➤ Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple and other local sheriffs plan to meet with Governor Kathy Hochul’s staff to discuss her order that stops county jails from hiring nearly 2,000 former state correction officers fired after a recent strike.
