BUSINESS NEWS

  • Albany Airport rerouted flights today because weather delays and TSA shortages caused disruptions. Passengers reported long waits at rental counters and rushed transfers between terminals amid ongoing travel challenges.  NewsChannel 13
  • Hudson Valley Creamery, a local cheese packaging company, won gold at the World Championship Cheese Contest in Wisconsin and showcased its process that packages goat cheese into logs. The company, owned by a France-based firm, will soon add an automatic filling machine + rework mis-tuned honey cheese batches.  WAMC

  • The Ravi Shankar Ensemble began its U.S. tour at The Egg Monday night after a weekend rehearsal in Albany. Curated by Shankar’s family (Sukanya and Anushka), the group performed select sitar compositions to honor his legacy.  WAMC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Paesan’s Pizza in Latham says rising gas prices caused by the war in Iran are making deliveries more expensive and prompting 50% of diners to pick up orders today. Owner Frank Scavio said drivers now pay ($15 to $20) extra and may see fees adjusted if prices keep rising.  NewsChannel 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Families at South Colonie High School are worried after three student fights and threat rumors spread this week, and school officials say the incidents were isolated (some parents ask for better communication).  NewsChannel 13
  • Students in Albany have reported difficulties accessing school transportation, and local leaders are examining new bus options under current state guidelines — a student-led walk is planned for March 23 at 12:00 p.m. from the Capitol to Green Tech Charter School to highlight the issue.  WRGB
  • Colonie school officials are investigating social media posts that raised violence concerns after students returned to campus today, and they are coordinating with law enforcement to strengthen security measures.  WRGB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State officials from the DEC announced a brush burning ban starting today until May 14 to reduce wildfire risks from dry brush and debris. Backyard fire pits and small campfires with controlled fuel are allowed in Albany (and statewide).  NewsChannel 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monday, the Regional Food Bank is supplying truckloads of food to 200 TSA workers (180 agents) at Albany International Airport, where all have reported for duty despite missing full pay due to the government shutdown.   • National Guard troops from the 109th Airlift Wing in Scotia returned from Antarctica on March 11 after flying dozens of sorties that logged 900 flight hours and transported 1,086 passengers plus millions of pounds of cargo and fuel—supporting scientific research under Operation Deep Freeze.  WRGB
  • Albany County launched its fourth annual I Voted sticker design contest for K-12 students on March 16 (entries must include I Voted and be nonpartisan) and accepts submissions until July 10. The winning design, chosen after public voting Aug. 3-31, will print on General Election Day, Nov. 3.  WRGB

  • UAlbany women’s lacrosse freshman Mya Carroll was named America East Rookie of the Week for the week of March 16 after scoring four career-high goals in a win over New Hampshire; her two-game performance marks her third honor overall in her college career.  University at Albany
  • The Siena Saints will face Duke in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Thursday at 2:50 p.m. in Greenville + they return after last playing from 2008 to 2010.  WAMC
  • The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team will host its ‘Every Child Matters’ game on Saturday to honor indigenous children affected by residential schools; the Great Danes come off two wins and lead America East in key stats under head coach Katie Thomson, who recently achieved 100 career victories.  University at Albany
