  • The Dollar General on South Pearl Street in Albany’s South End is set to close as part of 96 planned nationwide closures in the first quarter of 2025. The store — the only one in Albany — has been discounting items by up to 50% and its closure may leave residents with fewer options for staple groceries in a local food desert.  Times Union

CRIME NEWS

  • Two people charged in an animal cruelty case for the death of a 1-year-old pit bull pleaded not guilty Friday—Christopher Maxwell from the Bronx is accused of dragging and burning the dog while Latisha Allis, 32 of Albany faces charges for aggravated cruelty and torturing or injuring animals.  NewsChannel 13
  • Albany police arrested two men on Thursday after a traffic stop near Eagle St. and Morton Ave. in Albany — driver Maleek S. McMurray, 24, from Troy had a loaded gun with a high-capacity magazine and his passenger Patris J. Derville Jr., 26, from Albany had a loaded, reportedly stolen gun — and both were charged with felony weapon offenses and arraigned in court on Friday.  WRGB
  • The Guilderland Police Department arrested 53-year-old Akili-Abdul Duncan from Albany for criminal possession of a weapon on March 20 after recovering a loaded pistol from Crossgates Mall—an investigation aided by ATF and Rensselaer Police that led to his arraignment before Judge Tabak with bail set and remand to the Albany County Correctional Facility.  WRGB

  • Rosamaria Luppino McHugh, a 55-year-old paralegal and business owner, is running for the Albany 6th Ward Common Council seat and wants to boost public safety and address community concerns.
