COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Colonie Restaurant Week—running from March 24th through March 30th—offers fixed-price three-course meals at local restaurants for food lovers. Many eateries are joining the celebration to welcome longtime diners and new guests.  WRGB

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 14 at 6:30 a.m., Colonie police responded to a car-versus-pedestrian crash on Wolf Road near Beltrone Drive where 58-year-old Schenectady resident Migdalia Aulet was struck and killed when the vehicle fled the scene—suspect Heath R. Mabeus was arrested in Clifton Park on March 16.  Spotlight News

  • Comedian Kathy Griffin will perform at the Paramount in Peekskill on March 28 before bringing her tour to a close with her final show at The Egg in Albany on March 29—her last night on the road.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Albany Police Department announced on March 19th that it is hiring nine crisis workers and three supervisors to serve as first responders who will assist victims and families dealing with violence, mental health and other challenges. Chief Brendan Cox explained that the new team will answer calls using national criteria and connect residents to further services—applications for the crisis worker role offer an annual salary of $51,560—$73,840.  WRGB
  • Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy and the legislature will unveil two initiatives to improve housing affordability. One initiative will launch a First-Time Homebuyer Navigator Program while the other will expand a real property tax exemption to support new housing development for local residents.  WRGB
  • The Albany Common Council debates a zoning change today that would end decades-old single-family home zoning and allow accessory dwelling units—councilor Owusu Anane supports the plan to ease housing shortages while councilor Tom Hoey raises concerns about neighborhood rights and enforcement challenges—with residents invited to share their views at the 5:30 p.m. committee meeting.  WAMC
  • Vietnam War veterans will receive lapel pins at a memorial ceremony held at 11 a.m. on March 29 at the Flagpole Assembly Field, 200 Duell Road in Schuylerville—meanwhile, the Division of Military and Naval Affairs is accepting applications for state-issued Iraq and Afghan War Commemorative Medals from eligible service members and their families.  Times Union

  • The Delightful Run for Women training challenge began this morning at the University of Albany as its 47th year of events. Participants train on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at Halfmoon Town Park as they prepare for the 5K race on May 31 — registration for the challenge ends April 6 at 11:59 p.m.  WRGB
