CULTURE NEWS

  • Veteran journalist Tom Junod, a UAlbany graduate, will appear at the NYS Writer’s Institute event on April 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Campus Center West Addition to discuss his new book that examines evolving ideas of masculinity.  WAMC
  • Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, celebrating its 150th birthday and completing a $14.5 million renovation, will host an organ concert by Adam Tinkle on March 31 at 7 p.m. (The performance will showcase the organ's unique sounds and quirks through improvised music.)  WAMC
  • Youth FX and artist-in-residence Noel W Anderson will present Remix/Rebellion at UAlbany Art Museum on April 2 at 4:30 p.m. by screening IYKYK while engaging local students in creative filmmaking.  University at Albany

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A teacher at Green Tech Charter School was fired for crossing student—teacher boundaries, and officials are investigating a second teacher after a police probe was noted.  WRGB
  • Cohoes High School tested new metal detectors on Monday, Mar. 23 at the main entrance and will launch the system next Monday, Mar. 30—this test lets students and staff adjust ahead of full safety measures for firearm detection.  NewsChannel 13
  • UAlbany junior Harry Weinstein will present his research on next-generation chip-making materials at Showcase on Thursday, Apr. 30. The free event (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) will offer poster sessions and presentations for students, alumni, and community members.  University at Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AIM Services, a nonprofit from Saratoga County, will expand supported decision making for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in New York over five years with an $8 million contract. Officials say the program will help 100,000 New Yorkers live more independently (the first statewide effort of its kind).  WAMC
  • A panel hosted by the Center for Law and Justice gathered local residents (including Albany Police Chief Brendan Cox and District Attorney Lee Kindlon) Tuesday night to discuss challenges with the justice system. The discussion highlighted delays and legal process barriers while exploring ways to improve fairness.  WRGB
  • Gov. Hochul announced a new online training to help mental health professionals support first responders — including EMTs and firefighters. The course lasts one hour, is offered during First Responder Wellness Week, and provides continuing education credit through interactive modules on culture and health challenges.  WRGB

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAlbany's baseball team used a grand slam from Jaxon Mueller and a four-run rally to beat UMass 4-3 in their home opener at Varsity Field on Tuesday afternoon — the team will host UMBC for a series from March 27 to 29.  University at Albany
  • Gerry McNamara left Siena after two successful seasons to become the new head coach for Syracuse men's basketball. Siena University began a nationwide search for a new coach + it aims to build on his legacy.  WAMC
  • On Tuesday, March 24, 23 local high school teams sharpened their skills at the CBA Dome during the 3rd Annual Girls Flag Football Jamboree organized by KidzFirst Youth Development — former New York Giants coached the players and organizers noted growth from 16 teams last year.  WRGB
  • UAlbany freshman Katie Parisi was named Rookie of the Week by the America East Conference Tuesday after she hit a .500 average with five RBI at Bryant. This is her second honor and the team will host five home games this week.  University at Albany
