BUSINESS NEWS

  • A plan to turn a former school building into a Tesla dealership will be before the Colonie Town Planning Board on April 8th at 6 p.m., with WCCS Albany LLC (the developer) proposing a 30,000-square-foot showroom and service center on a 7.4-acre site that will include 277 parking spaces. Tesla faces production challenges and rising global competition after a 13% drop in Q1 deliveries, and the company will share more details in its Q1 report on April 22nd.  Spotlight News

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 3 at 6:00 a.m., Albany police executed four search warrants on Liebel Street and Third Avenue, seizing a loaded 9mm handgun, a .32 caliber revolver and a loaded AR pistol while charging a 15-year-old with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and arresting parolee Jeyson Guerrero for possessing a loaded AR pistol.  WRGB
  • An Albany man—Michael Myrick, 26—pleaded guilty on Friday to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon after officers found a .22 caliber and defaced semi-automatic handgun in his Clifton Avenue home during a police initiative, and he now faces up to eight years in prison plus a possible five-year probation with a sentencing hearing set for May 15.  ABC NEWS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The federal government canceled funding for tutoring and counseling on Friday — ending vital programs for hundreds of local students and forcing schools to halt services, while education providers saw their support plans disrupted. Local centers like Sylvan Learning now face setbacks — and state officials prepare legal action as communities cope with the abrupt change.  Times Union
  • UAlbany launched its new Artificial Intelligence and Society College yesterday to expand AI-focused courses across all nine schools and prepare students for ethical and equitable AI practices. The college will coordinate interdisciplinary research in the associated AI and Society Research Center—backed by an initial $2.4 million funding announced by Gov. Hochul.  University at Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Business owners and residents met with local, county and state leaders today to discuss safety concerns and the effect of crime perception on community security — urging officials to listen to small business voices. They also addressed issues such as homelessness, parking, panhandling and gun violence, and called for community input in using the governor's $400 million for city revitalization — stressing local involvement in shaping Albany’s future.  ABC NEWS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dean Berhaupt became the first cancer patient to receive CAR T-cell therapy in Albany today at New York Oncology Hematology. The treatment uses patient T-cells—modified to fight multiple myeloma—and now offers a local option that cuts the need to travel to larger centers.  WRGB
