COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Regional grocery stores in the Capital Region are hosting a pet food drive (Pet Food and Supply Drive) to support animal shelters until April 30th, with donation stations at every Market 32 and Price Chopper. Some stores will back the Capital District Humane Association while others will support local agencies.  WRGB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Shaker Road - Loudonville Fire Department responded on Sunday afternoon to a report that a dryer caught fire in Ryan Hall at Siena College; the building's sprinklers activated to contain the fire until crews used a water can to extinguish it.  NewsChannel 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Saratoga Springs Police said Michael Collins (27) died after his roommate Brendan Carl (facing charges of second-degree manslaughter and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon) shot him with a BB gun at their Warren Street home on Sunday morning, and Carl remains in custody.  NewsChannel 13
  • Police are investigating vandalism of a Pride flag pole outside Rotterdam Community Center on Thursday night—described by pastor Dustin Longmire as hate-driven—that spurred a 10 a.m. rally today and followed a similar act at his church on Sunday.  Times Union
  • A Saratoga Springs man was arrested on Sunday after allegedly shooting his roommate with a BB gun, leaving Michael Collins dead after being rushed to the hospital, and 26-year-old Brendan Carl now faces charges of second-degree manslaughter and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon — his bail was set at $25,000 cash, $50,000 partial bond or $300,000 bond.  ABC NEWS 10

  • On Saturday, April 6, live music at Larkin Hi-Fi featured saxophonist Kevin Kevilar Brown and vocalists Alexys Rae, Ohzhe, and Aila Chiar mixing jazz, rap, and blues—Aila Chiar honored jazz legend Cab Calloway before she sung her own verses.  Spotlight News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since the start of this year, Albany has seen fewer car crashes after lowering the speed limit to 25 mph and using school zone cameras—93 injury crashes were reported through March 18 compared to 146 last year. City officials said these changes are part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety across the city.  Times Union
  • Craig Child, formerly of IBM Research, has been named the first director of the EUV Accelerator lab at Albany NanoTech and will help boost U.S. chip manufacturing. The lab, part of the National Semiconductor Technology Center funded under the CHIPS and Science Act, will be operational later this year.  Times Union
