  • Nine-year-old Luca Barratto won a LEGO contest with his custom-built Ferrari, earning him a trip to LEGOLAND on Tuesday, April 7, his mom said. The win comes as a welcome boost before his upcoming surgery for a cleft lip.  NewsChannel 13

  • A report from Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress shows the region lost over 10,000 residents between 2021 and 2022 despite a wave of newcomers drawn by remote work.   • UAlbany introduced The Morning Minnie email today with a feature on Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, honoring campus tradition and history (including her rescue from a campus fire). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A $2.5 million pedestrian safety campaign has launched as the Department of Health partners with the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (and the Transportation Department) to cut crashes after 14,000 pedestrian injuries and 300 deaths in 2024; pedestrians are urged to use crosswalks and wait for signals.  WRGB
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that 215 state crews will fill 175,000 potholes in April using over 8,000 tons of asphalt on state roads in the Capital Region + the project covers key routes while motorists are urged to report hazards by calling the designated hotline.  NewsChannel 13

  • On Monday, Apr. 6, Medical Monday featured Dr. Tracey Weigel of Albany Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery on the WAMC radio show hosted by Ray Graf, where listeners could call with questions at 800-348-2551.  WAMC
  • Planned Parenthood of Greater New York now offers the morning-after pill for STI prevention at all its locations today, providing immediate access to essential care for residents.  WRGB

SPORTS NEWS

  • Senior goalkeeper Grace Cincebox earned America East Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday after making critical saves in a 14-9 win over UMBC that improved the Great Danes to 4-0 in conference play. The team will host Bryant on Saturday, Apr. 11 at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium.  University at Albany
  • Jacob Smith of UAlbany was named Defensive Player of the Week by America East after recording five turnovers and three ground balls against Binghamton Saturday. The lacrosse team will host Vermont on Saturday + play Siena on Tuesday at Casey Stadium.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany sports are busy this week — the Great Danes will play baseball on Wednesday, April 8 at Varsity Field against LIU, hold track and field meets at RPI on April 10 and 11, and host a lacrosse doubleheader on Saturday at Casey Stadium.  University at Albany
