CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Eric Chapman (19) was sentenced on Tuesday by Albany County Court to 14 years in prison on two weapons charges after police said he tossed a gun during a warrant arrest on Oct. 5, 2023 and was caught carrying a loaded Glock on July 3, and he faces additional time if convicted in the murder case of 18-year-old Javone Sims Jr. who was shot on June 22 with his trial set to begin on June 27. - ➤ A $7,000 reward is offered for any information on Lavender, a dog found with a missing ear and injuries in Schenectady last month who is now recovering at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society—police arrested Basean D. Brooks, 31, for allegedly abandoning her though they have not determined who caused the injuries. NewsChannel 13
- ➤ Demetrius Howard, a Schenectady man, was sentenced on April 1 to 10 years in prison after a jury convicted him of multiple weapon charges stemming from a 2022 incident near 901 Crane Street where he reportedly grabbed an officer’s wrist during an arrest — his sentence comes after a trial that concluded on January 10. - ➤ At 7:20 p.m. Monday, Albany Police said a woman was assaulted in a rear yard on Washington Avenue after exiting a CDTA bus near Central Ave and Quail St—authorities described a suspect wearing a face mask, green sweatshirt, blue jeans, white sneakers and a tan backpack and urged anyone with information to come forward. - ➤ Steve Zelin, a UAlbany alumnus and global head at PJT Partners, spoke at the eighth annual Massry Lecture on April 4—recalling his journey from Brooklyn to earning his degree and building a 40-year corporate career. UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez and the Massry School of Business Dean launched the Inspire the Next campaign—aimed at increasing student scholarships and faculty excellence. University at Albany
- ➤ A UAlbany graduate researcher is working with the New York State Department of Transportation on a tool that uses machine learning to spot dangerous road conditions by analyzing camera images. Her project will be shown on April 30 at UAlbany Showcase—offering a new way to keep roads safer during harsh weather. University at Albany
- ➤ Columbia High School's physical education teacher and strength and conditioning coach Tom Libardi was named New York State Coach of the Year for the Northeast Region by the National High School Strength Coaches Association.
