COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Guilderland bus driver Rob Rowe, known for his warm greetings and fun rides since 1991, is retiring after 34 years with the local school district. He will continue driving part-time to bring smiles to students — his long service has made a lasting impact on the community.  WRGB
  • Adirondack Basement Systems will host its first 'Cars & Canines' fundraiser on May 9 at its Mechanicville warehouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event features classic cars, local vendors and dog-friendly activities that support the Capital Region Animal Protective Foundation and celebrate a new dog park opening.  WRGB
  • Yesterday's Roundtable Panel saw panelists Jackie Berry, a cognitive sciences lecturer and former Fulbright scholar, former Congressman John Faso, and Robert Griffin from the University at Albany discuss current issues in news and beyond.  WAMC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local volunteers and BID chairman Christopher Burke revitalized Lark Street with a ribbon cutting at The Eleven at Lark Hall on Wednesday morning, while officials confirmed eight businesses already opened or coming soon. The BID will hire staff for outreach and street cleaning (using grant funding).  WRGB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Genevieve Wheeler Brown, a decorative arts specialist and author of Beyond Blue and White, will discuss her book with Dr. Deborah Hamer on Apr. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Albany Institute of History and Art (the event will also feature blue and white delft objects).  WAMC
  • Greg King of Squeaky Feet shared his insights in an interview with WAMC about the band's creative jam style and Steely Dan covers ahead of their concert at Lark Hall in Albany on April 15. His discussion highlights how the group blends progressive rock with improvisation (a local crowd favorite).  WAMC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • BAV received federal funding to improve local farms' access to institutions. The initiative, led by Jake Levin, will map key supply chain needs and connect 13 stakeholders over the next two years to open a new market channel for local farms.  WAMC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAlbany students are adapting children’s books into interactive tools for local classrooms. The course, led by speech-language pathologist Kelly Fagan and funded by Broadview Federal Credit Union (via a grant), uses laminated pages and velcro tabs to help students with autism and diverse learning needs access reading and communication.  University at Albany
  • With its summer job program nearing 700 applications — a 20% rise over last year — Albany invites teenagers aged 14 to 18 to sign up at Albany West Community Center. City officials including Mayor Dorcey Applyrs and Youth/Workforce Commissioner Jonathan Jones are providing guidance during the final week.  WRGB

  • Dan Delurey, former White House Director of Clean Energy (now a Senior Fellow at Vermont Law School), discussed climate change and emerging clean energy technologies with host Ray Graf on WAMC on Wednesday, April 8 while showcasing his 25 years of expertise in the field.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials, veterans, and community members led by Congressman Tonko and Sen. Fahy urged the VA on April 8 to reverse the planned closure of the Schenectady VA Clinic in Rotterdam, fearing it will force more veterans to travel for care (servicing over 7,000 county veterans).  WRGB

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAlbany head coach Chris Cannata reached 900 wins when the Great Danes won 5-3 in eight innings of the first game of a doubleheader at Siena Softball Field in Loudonville on Wednesday; they dropped the second game 5-4 and will face Fordham Saturday at 2:30 p.m.  University at Albany
  • The UAlbany baseball team rallied in the eighth inning to win 6-5 over LIU at Varsity Field, with Tre Mariano adding two RBIs and Tyler Kneller closing the game. The team will play a three-game series at Bryant starting Friday.  University at Albany
