CRIME NEWS

  • An Albany man—Corey Martin, 46—was sentenced to seven years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to carrying a loaded handgun on September 12 near Quail and West Streets while he already had three prior felony convictions, including drug charges.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Keri Mazzuca pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence in a cold case after suffocating her newborn—and later attempting to destroy evidence at Washington Park—and now faces up to 25 years in prison with an additional five years of post-release supervision.  WRGB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Albany officials announced a 1.5-megawatt solar farm will be built at the former North Albany landfill to power over 200 homes and be completed in 2027—part of the Renewable Energy Access and Community Help program designed to lower energy costs for low- and moderate-income residents. City and state leaders celebrated the project as a key milestone in the Climate Smart Communities initiative.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul announced a tentative labor deal with state police investigators that provides for salary increases, improved location pay, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave, and better benefits pending union ratification — the contract covers April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2026 and affects over 1,100 investigators.  WRGB
  • Governor Kathy Hochul announced an additional $30 million is now available for New Yorkers to lease or purchase electric vehicles through the Drive Clean Rebate program; the plan offers rebates up to $2,000 on over 60 models and increases incentives for EV charger installations as NYPA expands its fast-charging network.  WRGB
  • Assemblymember Emérita Torres introduced the Preventing Algorithmic Pricing Discrimination Act that will require businesses to post a clear notice when prices are set by an algorithm using personal data—aiming to stop discrimination based on ZIP codes, race, or income. If signed by the governor, the bill will take effect 60 days later—giving companies time to update their systems while facing fines up to $1,000 per violation.  ABC NEWS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a recent basketball event for people with autism, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara sharply criticized Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for remarks saying individuals with autism cannot do simple things — like dating or playing sports. He said the comments, made during National Autism Awareness Month, are hurtful and misrepresent the abilities of those on the spectrum.  NewsChannel 13
