  • Mayor Mike Dvorchak renamed Hillsdale Park as The Tom Carty Town Hall Park in honor of Tom Carty +a longtime town board member who passed in 2025+; a plaque and proclamation recognizing his work were unveiled at the ceremony.  NewsChannel 13
  • Colonie police used a drone to locate an 8-year-old who wandered away from his mother on Monday morning near Colonie Town Park — the child was found at a playground about half a mile away and safely reunited with his mother.  WRGB
  • Kelly's Angels annual Mother-Lovin’ 5K returns to Saratoga Spa State Park on Mother's Day, May 10 (the event honors loved ones who have passed) as three-time defending champion Anthony Zazzaro will not run because he is competing at another meet.  NewsChannel 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • An Albany family is honoring John Kolach, a WWII veteran and Auschwitz survivor whose hardships led him to serve in the US Army and inspire his descendants; he was born in Albany (in 1922) and survived three years in a concentration camp (his legacy lives on).  NewsChannel 13
  • On March 22, WAMC On the Road hosted a conversation about music’s role in healing and empathy at historic Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs with experts including Sarah Craig, Dr. Dominique Vuvan, and musician Dan Berggren (led by Aaron Shellow-Lavine).  WAMC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Capital Region Language Center offers language classes in-person just off Wolf Road and online with 25 part-time teachers. Founder Kim Andersen and instructors Sonya Kim, Yoko Segerstrom, and Miriam Rogers help the community connect and learn diverse languages.  WAMC
  • Albany City School District said AP exam pass rates increased from 44% in 2019 to 66% in 2025 while the number of tests held steady. Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter credited the rise to giving students more choice in AP courses + announced plans to help underrepresented students stay in these classes.  WAMC

  • On Monday, April 27, Ray Graf hosted Medical Monday featuring Albany Med surgical oncologist Dr. Sandra DiBrito who discussed cancer treatments and minimally invasive surgery. Listeners could call in (800-348-2551) with questions during the program.  WAMC

  • UAlbany's baseball team plays Marist today at 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Turf. The men's lacrosse team will host America East Tournament semifinals on Thursday at Casey Stadium (games start at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.).  University at Albany
  • UAlbany men’s lacrosse players earned America East weekly awards Monday with Ryan Doherty as Offensive Player, Max Neeson as Defensive Player, and CJ Schwarz as Face-Off Specialist. The Great Danes host championship semifinals Thursday at Casey Stadium + will face off in the title game Saturday, May 2.  University at Albany
