COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Adirondack Thunder will host a fundraiser for firefighter Micki Guy, who fell from a truck and is recovering at Albany Medical Center — a 50-50 drawing and Chuck a Puck event will occur during Game 5 on Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at Harding Mazzotti Arena.  NewsChannel 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Schuyler Heights Fire Company (serving Colonie and Watervliet) announced Monday that it will seek permission from the New York State Supreme Court and Attorney General to close on May 17 after a dispute with district commissioners.  WAMC
  • Today, 124 law enforcement officers, prosecutors + advocates gathered at the Albany Capital Center to be honored for their efforts in stopping drunk and drugged driving. Award winners were nominated for going above and beyond to keep roads safe.  NewsChannel 13
  • DASNY announced today that over $5.5m will support the Albany Jewish Community Center’s expansion and renovation, which includes facility upgrades (improved pools, enhanced safety, and expanded programs) to boost community wellness.  NewsChannel 13
  • Schuyler Heights Fire Company will disband soon as local officials confirmed the decision amid challenges, and the department will share a transition plan later (more details pending).  Spotlight News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A revised plan for Liberty Park now features a mixed-use development with apartments, retail and a 3-acre park — the dropped soccer stadium idea remains under discussion for a sports project in the region. Developer Jeff Buell said he is exploring alternative sites with local municipalities.  WRGB

SPORTS NEWS

  • University at Albany’s track athlete Jed Elmbarki was named Track Athlete of the Week Tuesday after setting a personal record in the 3000m steeplechase at the Penn Relays Carnival (Apr. 23-25). He will join teammates at the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 9-10.  University at Albany
  • University at Albany baseball players Dylan Banner and Brian Cadieux were named America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. Banner pitched 7 scoreless innings (his second honor of the season) while Cadieux threw 5 scoreless innings to help the team earn its third and fourth weekly awards.  University at Albany
  • The University at Albany baseball team lost to Marist 10 to 5 Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field (the team rallied late before falling short). They will play UMBC in a three-game series starting Friday at 6:00 p.m.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany softball pitcher Hayley Wieczerzak was named Pitcher of the Week by the America East Conference after striking out 27 batters in 19.2 innings at UMass Lowell and Colgate + the team will face Maine on May 1-2.  University at Albany
  • Lee McElroy, a long-time leader in college athletics and former UAlbany director, will receive the 60th James J. Corbett Memorial Award at the NACDA Convention on Monday, June 8 at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas — honoring his 40-year career in sports administration.  University at Albany
