COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way and CDPHP have launched a partnership for 518 Day to boost volunteer efforts for local charities. For every participant in the Workforce Team Challenge, $10 will be donated to Catholic Charities and Crossroads Center for Children.  WRGB
  • CBS6 on Friday, May 1st, 2026 welcomes veteran journalist Tom Bosco to anchor the 5:00, 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. newscasts and lead the investigative team. He joins after nearly 20 years in Columbus and will help cover the Belmont Stakes live from Saratoga Springs in the coming weeks.  WRGB
  • Former Troy airman 2nd Lt. Joseph Burke, killed during WWII and identified with new DNA techniques, returns home today with honors from the New York Army National Guard. He learned to fly at Albany Airport and now rests in a marked grave after years in unmarked sites.  WRGB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Albany’s NanoTech Complex will lead a new state partnership to train 30 apprentices for future technician roles at Micron’s planned semiconductor fab in Clay, with recruitment through career and technical education programs + pre-apprenticeships. The 16-month program cycles will begin in August and aim for a 70% conversion rate.  WRGB
  • Travelers at Albany International Airport can now fly nonstop daily to Denver with United Airlines + the flight lasts just over four hours and comes as the terminal upgrades receive federal funding.  WRGB
  • Stewart’s reintroduces its Bel-Mint Stakes ice cream flavor (a rebranded Mint Cookie Crumble) now available through Sunday, June 7. The shop is selling $99 three-day passes for the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, which will run at Saratoga Race Course from June 3 to June 7 while Belmont Park undergoes construction.  WRGB

  • Violence prevention expert Meg Stone discusses her upcoming book, 'Don't Fight Back' And 10 Other Myths About Crime, Personal Safety, and Gender-Based Violence, on last night's 51% at WAMC in Albany. She explains that many common safety tips lack research support — her book offers advice that challenges outdated myths.  WAMC

  • June Wang, director of the New York State Mesonet (University at Albany), explained that thermal spring starts when temperatures remain above 41°F for several days. Data from 2018 to 2026 show regional variations and a trend toward earlier spring, although as of today the Adirondacks have not reached this change.  University at Albany

  • The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team beat UMBC 14-3 on Thursday to advance to the America East Championship game, and they will face No. 3 Vermont tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Tom and Mary Casey Stadium.  University at Albany
  • The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team earned 13 America East honors with Paisley Cook, Grace Cincebox, and Mya Carroll receiving key awards; the team secured its No. 2 seed in the upcoming tournament and a share of the regular-season title.  University at Albany
