COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Helga, a rescued pup seeking a furever home, was introduced this morning by Maggie Blodgett and Chris Trifiletti from Petey's Legacy—she was treated for heartworm disease and ear infections after arriving underweight from a shelter in Virginia.  WRGB

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire forced three residents from their Albany home (322 Orange St.) when it broke out at 3:45 Monday morning, was contained within 30 minutes, caused extensive damage to the exterior and first floor of the two-story building, and no injuries were reported as officials investigate the cause.  NewsChannel 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Trial has begun for Ronald Rayher—accused of killing local Elvis impersonator Thomas Krider by tying him up and using chloroform repeatedly during a contract sexual act—and he faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.  NewsChannel 13
  • Joshua Thomas, a 19-year-old freshman from Saratoga, was arraigned on charges of two counts of arson and one count of attempted arson after fires broke out at Hines Hall on April 25—he is accused of pouring rubbing alcohol to start fires near a dorm room where students slept.  WRGB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today is National Teacher Day and part of Teacher Appreciation Week from May 5—9, as Cardona's Market celebrates educators by unveiling The Teacher's P-E-T sandwich featuring prosciutto, eggplant, and tomato on an Italian roll and inviting nominations for a Teacher's Lounge Hot Lunch Box contest to honor outstanding teachers.  WRGB
  • On May 5th, the University at Albany Student Association Senate passed the 2025-2026 Internal and External Budget, cutting club funds and saving $75,983 in the External Budget and $102,188.28 in the Internal Budget. New leaders were sworn in — President Trevor Pettit, Vice President Allison Mitchell, Senate Chair Troy Serao, and Associate Justices James Cuddy and Milexy Campos all took office.  Albany Student Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since tickets began last October, Albany’s school zone cameras have issued $3.24 million in fines when drivers go at least 10 mph over the 20 mph limit—about 71,000 of 107,000 tickets have been paid and 70% went to drivers from outside the area. The funds are split with 40% going to the city and 60% to the camera company.  NewsChannel 13
  • Col. William Snyder of the New York Army National Guard was promoted to colonel at the Connecticut Street Armory in Buffalo by Maj. Gen. Raymond Shields in front of his soldiers and family. He now leads 600 soldiers across the state—including units in Glenville and Queensbury—and is one of only 32 colonels among over 11,400 soldiers in the force.  Times Union

SPORTS NEWS

  • Albany’s Great Danes won four America East titles over the weekend by claiming championships in men’s and women’s track and field and lacrosse, which earned postseason spots for both lacrosse teams as the men’s team will host Siena on Wednesday and the women’s team will face Yale on Friday. The men’s track team returned to winning after a two-year break while the women’s track team extended its record with a 16th consecutive title — standout efforts by freshman Brady Smith and senior Gracie McCauley helped the wins.  University at Albany
