EDUCATION NEWS

  • About 30 UAlbany undergraduates spent their semester learning to use artificial intelligence for weather prediction—by combining lectures with lab work that built a neural network model for forecasting El Niño and La Niña events. The class, taught by Assistant Professor Zheng Wu, gave students new skills for future work in weather research.  University at Albany
  • UAlbany graduate students in I-O psychology partnered with the Regional Food Bank to run job analyses and offer science-backed recommendations—updating five job descriptions to better match the work employees perform. They interviewed staff and collected data during fall 2024—aiming to improve work processes for the organization.  University at Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers, formerly incarcerated mothers, and mothers of incarcerated children gathered at the Capitol on May 13 to rally for sentencing reform legislation — including the Second Look Act and Earned Time Act — to reduce family separation. The event featured personal testimonies that underscored the need to update outdated sentencing laws affecting many residents.  WRGB
  • Since October 2024, Albany drivers have received over 100,000 school zone speeding tickets, with those going 10 mph over the 20 mph limit receiving a $50 fine.   • Kenta "qaaa" Lange of UAlbany Esports finished third in Street Fighter 6 at the Collegiate Esports Commissioner’s Cup held yesterday in Arlington, Texas—earning a $3,500 prize and marking his first in-person tournament. He plans to compete in future events with the team.  University at Albany
