- ➤ An 18-year-old was arrested Friday at 8:05 p.m. in Albany after he tried to flee officers during routine canvassing near Lexington and Sheridan Avenues & was found with a flare gun modified to shoot live rounds, facing charges of second and third degree criminal possession of a weapon. - ➤ Superintendent Jeffrey P. Simons presented a $115.1 million budget plan that needs a 60% vote on Tuesday because a 4.8% tax levy increase breaks the usual cap. If voters do not approve it, officials will cut about $950,000—possibly causing 10 to 15 layoffs and reducing free pre-K programs as Simons prepares to retire in June. Times Union

- ➤ On May 17, the EPA announced plans to roll back clean water rules by delaying new PFAS guidelines and removing limits on three PFAS compounds while keeping the standard for PFOA and PFOS unchanged; critics warn these changes could put New Yorkers at risk. Rob Hayes of Environmental Advocates NY said public health may suffer even as the state defended its $6 billion investment in clean water since 2017. WAMC

- ➤ New York State Police have started a training initiative with the New York State Animal Protection Federation to teach 200 troopers how to better spot and handle animal cruelty cases. - ➤ The state Department of Transportation will close state Route 351 in Brunswick for three months to replace a culvert. Passenger vehicles should use state Route 355 — county Highway 19 and state Route 2 as detour routes while truck traffic follows state Route 66. Times Union
