COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 18, Albany residents celebrated 518 Day with an open house at the new Love Albany Center on Kate Street—housed in the former Third Reformed Church bought by Christ Church in March. The center will serve as a resource hub for the Delaware Area and will host local non-profits such as the Free Food Fridge—adding a community kitchen and plans for expanding services.  WRGB
  • Temple Israel in Albany held Mitzvah Day on Sunday—its third year—where volunteers made craft kits, packed donated items into bags for homeless kids, filled school supply bags for grade school students, and cleaned the cemetery on Western Avenue.  NewsChannel 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Troy police investigated an alleged shots fired incident near 4th Street and Trenton Street on Saturday when patrols arrived at 8:30 p.m. and found no injuries as the suspect fled the scene.  ABC NEWS 10
  • A 19-year-old Siena College freshman from Saratoga was arraigned on May 5 in Albany County Court on arson charges after allegedly setting three fires in a campus dormitory on April 25 by pouring rubbing alcohol on the floor, and he remains in county jail.  Spotlight News

  • WAMC highlighted local entries in NPR's Tiny Desk Contest by featuring Enjoyous—an Albany-based band—and Soil & Soul led by Lisa Pellegrino from Newburgh in a segment that showcased their music. The series is part of the station’s effort to spotlight regional talent.  WAMC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shaker High held its senior prom on May 16 at the Albany Capital Center where seniors celebrated a memorable evening—freelance photographer Gary McPherson captured moments of the event.  Times Union
  • Hudson Valley Community College held its 71st commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 17 in Troy—degrees were awarded at 9 a.m. for STEM, 11:30 a.m. for Health Sciences and 2 p.m. for Business and Liberal Arts.  Times Union

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The city of Albany is expanding its compost services to keep food waste out of the landfill by adding eight new community bins and launching a compost doctor program to help residents manage their bins correctly. The program will roll out this summer — residents must sign up online to get a keycard or use an app for access.  WAMC
