CRIME NEWS

  • An Albany woman will be sentenced today for scamming an 86-year-old man out of more than $200,000 while acting as his caregiver with her accomplice—causing his home to go into foreclosure as they failed to pay his bills.  WRGB
  • Albany police arrested 23-year-old Vion Fallen on Tuesday near First and Quail Streets—he was linked to a January Central Avenue burglary when a handgun was recovered during his arrest.  WRGB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Paul F. Tompkins will bring his Varietopia show to The Egg in Albany on June 2 at 7:30 p.m.—he will perform a mix of improv and comedy to entertain the audience.  WAMC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At his annual State of the University Address on Wednesday, SUNY Chancellor John King Jr. said the public university system pushed forward despite steep federal research funding cuts (threatening projects like disease treatment studies). He outlined plans to expand research and invest in emerging areas like artificial intelligence (to boost student support and workforce training) as SUNY prepares to grow academic programs this fall.  WRGB
  • Four UAlbany students received SUNY/OMH scholarships to support their mental health studies and were recognized on May 21 during Mental Health Awareness Month. The awards offer up to three years of funding + paid internships to help them prepare for careers in mental health care.  University at Albany
  • Applications for the E3 Fellowship for STEM instructors are open with a deadline of June 20, as the program will begin with a First-Year Teaching Institute in the 2025-2026 academic year — later sessions will include a STEM Course Design Academy in June and a final showcase in spring.  University at Albany
  • Voters approved 97% of school district budgets on Tuesday, but Northville Central School’s $15.4 million budget (up 5.24%) and Scotia-Glenville’s $67 million proposal did not reach the 60% needed to override the tax cap. The Scotia-Glenville Board of Education will meet tonight to choose between a revised proposal for a revote or a contingency budget with steep cuts.  WAMC

  • At Empire State Plaza, the annual EV event showed new electric car technology and explained New York's plan to switch to zero-emission cars by 2035. New York Power Authority officials said more charging ports are being added to help support the change.  ABC NEWS 10

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul spoke at Common Roots Brewery on Wednesday to announce a $400 million budget investment aimed at revitalizing downtown Albany & creating safer streets, stronger neighborhoods, and a vibrant economy.
