- ➤ Colonie Center will host the inaugural Upstate Card Con on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—more than 50 vendors will offer sports cards, trading games, and memorabilia while Frog Alley Brewing provides on-site tastings for visitors over 21 with free admission. ABC NEWS 10
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ State data from the Division of Criminal Justice Services shows that Albany had seven shootings this year—a 50% drop from 14 in the first four months of 2024—and that shooting victims decreased from 15 to 7 while three people were killed, unchanged from last year. NewsChannel 13

- ➤ June brings Pride Month celebrations to the Capital Region with parades, festivals and picnics at venues such as Empire State Plaza Convention Center and Washington Park — events are set from June 1 to June 22 across local counties. - ➤ A public hearing was held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Albany County Office Building to discuss a new local law designed to replace aging lead service lines after the county received a $100 million state grant—supplemented by federal funds—to improve drinking water quality for residents. WRGB
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap study showed food insecurity grew in 2023, with over 355,000 people—about 12.2% of the region's population—struggling to get enough food and nearly 95,000 children affected at a rate of 15.4% in counties like Saratoga, Otsego, and Schenectady. Regional Food Bank CEO Tom Nardacci said local efforts to rescue food, build new partnerships, and support the community will intensify as the Capital Region’s meal gap increased by more than 2.2 million compared to the previous year. - ➤ University at Albany’s Damian Zuloaga received a $300,000 grant from BrightFocus Foundation to study how pregnancy and menopause together affect Alzheimer’s disease risk. He will use mouse models to examine memory, cognition and brain inflammation — the project may help lead to new treatments for the disease. University at Albany
- ➤ UAlbany chemist Alan Chen was awarded $2 million from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to fund his lab's work on computer simulations that model RNA in 3D. His research aims to improve RNA-based diagnostic tools and treatments over the next five years. University at Albany
