COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences got a $100,910 grant from The Hortense and Louis Rubin Community Health Fund to launch yearly Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic screening sessions in low-income areas of South End, West Hill, Arbor Hill and North Albany. The program—providing in-home and mobile screenings for the homebound—will help 500 people annually and start at the college's public health practice, The Collaboratory.  ABC NEWS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albany’s Pine Bush Preserve received $5 million in state funding for improvements to its Discovery Center—helping teach local students about nearby plants and animals. DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said the funding from the Unplug and Play initiative will boost access to nature for all community members.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Former Albany County Legislator William Clay, who served over 20 years and helped start a minority-owned business program, died Thursday morning at age 91. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, June 13 at Metropolitan New Testament Mission Baptist Church with a public viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. (Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.)  Times Union
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul replaced Tremaine Wright with Jessica Garcia as chair of the Cannabis Control Board following last year's shakeup of the state's cannabis office—Garcia's nomination will be confirmed by the state Senate.  Times Union
  • Local law enforcement in Albany urged lawmakers to pass bill S.399/A.199 to ban the sale of semi-automatic pistols that can be turned into machine guns—Police Chief Brendan Cox said an increase in these DIY weapons has raised community risk, and the measure will be considered before the legislative session ends on June 12th.  ABC NEWS 10
