COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials previewed the new $20 million pool complex in Lincoln Park during a Friday news conference, and the facility — featuring a 10,000-square-foot pool, a 10-lane pool, a splash pad, a water slide, shade pavilions and picnic patio — will have a soft opening on July 4 with a capacity of 600; learn-to-swim programs will be offered once operating hours are finalized.  Times Union

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A State trooper was injured when a semi-truck hit his cruiser during a traffic stop on Friday at 12:39 p.m.—he was hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries and has since been released as westbound Thruway lanes were closed for several hours.  Times Union

  • The Albany cafe Fresh N’ Pressed, owned by Deana Datri and Jamie Gonzalez, celebrated 5 years in business despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. It opened in June 2020 (on Madison Avenue in Center Square) and was marked by recognition from the Lark Street Business Improvement District (reflecting its resilience).  WRGB

CRIME NEWS

  • Albany police are investigating a stabbing that occurred Friday night near Madison Avenue — officers responded at about 8:30 p.m. and found a 25-year-old man with stab wounds to his back who was then taken to Albany Medical Center in stable condition.  ABC NEWS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Siena College announced it will change its name to Siena University after the Board of Trustees voted on the change Friday morning, and college President Chuck Siefert explained the move in a statement late Friday night (the change comes as the school adds new graduate and professional programs).  WRGB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Albany County Department of Health said biosolid fertilizer used near New Scotland contaminated local tap water with E. coli last summer, leading the county to pause its use for 90 days. Lawmakers have proposed a bill that would impose a five-year moratorium on the fertilizer—requiring phased testing for PFAS and heavy metals—to protect drinking water and public health as the legislative session nears its end.  Times Union

HEALTH NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the State Department of Health have issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for several areas in the Capital Region starting at 12 a.m. today and ending at 11:59 p.m.—the advisory warns residents to limit outdoor activity due to fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke in Canada.  ABC NEWS 10
