COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 4th Family started the PROPEL violence prevention program to help Albany County youth avoid violence by addressing challenges in school and jobs—Albany County gave nearly $20,000 and the Carl E. Touhey Foundation added $200,000—and the program will add more activities in the fall.  ABC NEWS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon said 48-year-old Jermain Brown from Troy was sentenced to five years in prison for illegal firearm possession after he fled a traffic stop and police recovered a loaded revolver & 12.9 grams of crack cocaine during his arrest.  WRGB
  • On Wednesday, June 18 at approximately 1:55 p.m., the U.S. Marshal’s Task Force and Cohoes police arrested Mikel Hackett—a 39-year-old Syracuse man wanted for second-degree murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm—during a search at 46 Columbia Street, Apartment 2, where detectives also seized a loaded handgun, psilocybin mushrooms, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine before turning him over to Syracuse authorities.  WRGB

  • Lupe Fiasco headlined a three-act concert (with local performers Rhakim Ali and DJ TGIF) at the Alive at Five Juneteenth celebration on June 19th, 2025. Late spring thunderstorms hit before the show, but the weather cleared and thousands gathered under the interstate to enjoy the music.  Spotlight News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albany’s chief city auditor started a seven-month audit to review the housing market from 2019 to now. Candidates running to replace her question using an outside firm—Camoin Associates—at a cost of about $80,000 and call for more in-house reviews.  WAMC
  • Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said the proposed Medicaid cuts in the reconciliation bill will drastically affect the region—she made these remarks while attending the US Conference of Mayors in Tampa last Friday.  NewsChannel 13
  • New York will hold primaries on June 24 while early voting continues until June 22 — only registered party members may cast ballots in the closed races for local offices like mayor, sheriff, and city council. The election cycle includes contests in several major cities — Albany, New York City, and Buffalo will see influential local leaders chosen.  ABC NEWS 10
  • The 2025 legislative session ended with some bills passing and others failing—such as the cellphone ban and the Safe For Kids Act—while several environmental justice bills did not pass. L. Joy Williams of the NAACP and Sen. James Skoufis said advocates will push for environmental justice next session and that a public meeting about the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program will be held in July.  ABC NEWS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • New York is facing a heat wave that will begin Sunday with 'feels like' temperatures up to 105 degrees across regions such as western New York—health officials and Governor Hochul advise staying hydrated, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and checking on vulnerable neighbors while extra crews and a cooling program are set to help protect residents. This weather is expected to cause a rise in emergency room visits for heat injury as the state prepares for continued high temperatures through Thursday.  ABC NEWS 10
