COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thousands in Albany County lost power due to soaring temperatures and a failed utility pole component — National Grid said power for roughly 3,200 customers will be restored within two hours.  WRGB

CRIME NEWS

  • Saul Morales-Garcia, accused of attacking U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone with a knife as he left his downtown office, will appear in Albany City Court today while facing charges of attempted murder and related offenses (he is reportedly in the country illegally from El Salvador).  WRGB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York's Child Data Protection Act went into effect Friday to protect children online by banning sites from collecting personal data from anyone under 18 without informed consent—sites must receive parental consent for those under 13, and violations can incur up to $5,000 in penalties. State officials including Senator Andrew Gounardes, Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, and Attorney General Letitia James will enforce the law.  WRGB
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in 32 counties after last night's storms caused heavy rain, damaging winds, and power outages, and residents will face a heatwave that pushes temperatures over 100 degrees through Wednesday—emergency crews and supplies are being deployed to support affected areas—.  WRGB
  • Environmental advocates were frustrated after the Assembly ended its session on June 23 without voting on a plastics reduction bill that passed the Senate but lost support due to heavy lobbying — Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie said the failure was caused by 'lazy advocacy.'  Times Union
  • Albany County leaders announced a new Street Psychiatry program to help homeless people with mental health issues using a six-person team funded by $250,000 from the Downtown Initiative grant + they may seek another $150,000 to $200,000 to fully launch the service.  ABC NEWS 10
