Good morning, Albany. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 26th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albany’s new Lincoln Park Pool will open July 5 after nearly two years of work that replaced an old pool which leaked 500,000 gallons a day—its new design offers a lap pool with 10 lanes, splash pad, water slides, and a zero entry slope—and it will be available for Albany residents only from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Times Union
  • Mayor Kathy Sheehan and city officials held a groundbreaking for a new playground in Washington Park yesterday—replacing the old facility with plans for a swing, spin and climb zone, a tot area, and an open meadow. The playground will remain closed during construction while locals use other nearby playgrounds until the new facility opens this fall.  ABC NEWS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A former Schalmont High School student died Monday evening when her jet ski collided with a pontoon boat on Great Sacandaga Lake — officials say the accident reminds all boaters to have a New York State Boater Safety Certificate. Marine Patrol Officer Pat Mellon said the collision near the Broadalbin Boat Launch is under investigation.  WRGB

  • Willie Green—42—of Albany, a convicted murderer who pleaded guilty to carrying a loaded pistol illegally on January 1, was sentenced on Monday to 63 months in federal prison that will begin after his state 25-to-life murder sentence.  WRGB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed harmful algae blooms in waterbodies including Thompsons Lake, Alcove Reservoir, Lake Luzerne, Hedges Lake — and Bonita Lake from June 14 to June 23.
