ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Betty Napoli, the mother of Jessica Rowanski who died in Monday’s crash at the Westerlo intersection on County Routes 401 and 404, said that overgrown brush hidden the stop signs and urged the county to act immediately—at least four accidents have occurred there in the past two months and officials are working on both short-term fixes and long-term safety solutions.  WRGB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy and the county legislature announced that 53 local businesses received part of $950K from ARPA to help with operating costs and technical assistance. Each business will get up to $25,000 to support their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic & boost their operations.  ABC NEWS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Community members held a memorial Friday for a pit bull fatally shot in Albany earlier this week on Lark Drive — officials report no arrests have been made while a 20-year-old man remains hospitalized, and the dog's owner is set to speak Sunday evening.  NewsChannel 13
  • The Albany County Sheriff’s Office warned residents on June 27 about a phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement and demand fines to avoid arrest — the office stressed it will never ask for payment and urged people to hang up and call the non-emergency line if contacted.  Spotlight News
  • Early Friday morning, Troy Police responded to an incident on Park Ave where an adult male was stabbed during an argument at a residence (they arrived shortly after 3 a.m.) and he was taken to a local hospital with nonserious injuries.  WRGB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recounted how bald eagles in New York bounced back after dwindling to one pair in the early 1970s due to exposure to DDT (a pesticide). Wildlife biologist Matthew Palumbo said conservation efforts, including bringing in pre-adult eagles from Alaska, helped the species become common along local waterways.  ABC NEWS 10

  • Gov. Hochul’s press secretary—Avi Small—was placed on leave on June 25 after he allegedly inappropriately touched a male staffer at McGeary’s following a June 16 softball game, and an outside law firm is investigating the incident.  Times Union
  • Governor Hochul’s press secretary Avi Small resigned on Friday after a New York Times report accused him of sexual harassment — he had been placed on leave for reportedly inappropriate touching. The Governor’s Office said she has zero tolerance for misconduct.  ABC NEWS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Upstate Tick Testing Laboratory reported that 31% of ticks tested from January to June showed germs and more tick bites in New York are being recorded compared to last year. Dr. Saravanan Thangamani from SUNY Upstate Medical University said more people may get tick-borne diseases as ticks carrying several bugs are spreading into central New York—adding to rising outdoor exposures—so testing numbers and infections could grow.  Times Union
