- ➤ Albany police recovered a loaded 9mm handgun and crack cocaine near Central Ave and Lexington Ave on July 21 at 1:15 p.m.—18-year-old Tahjakese Hepburn of Albany was charged with weapon possession and 20-year-old Keylonne Williams of Rensselaer faced drug charges. WRGB
- ➤ A Troy man (26) fired an air rifle at a police car near 5th Avenue and 103rd Street Tuesday morning while officers cleared illegally parked vehicles for a construction crew, and negotiators later persuaded him to exit his home around 8:30 a.m. after he damaged a door panel, leading to charges of first-degree attempted assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief. - ➤ The Egg in Albany is holding a seat plaque giveaway contest that asks locals to send in their best egg-themed jokes by August 15 as part of its Seat Naming Campaign Fundraiser. The winning idea (which earns a free Egg Tote Bag) will be featured on a seat in the Hart Theatre for five years when the venue reopens in 2026. ABC NEWS 10
- ➤ Albany artist Eric Thompson released his new hip-hop track Ceasefire in Everytown after a violent Fourth of July weekend where 10 people were shot (mostly teenagers) as a call for local youth to lower gun violence. Thompson, who leads the Albany Violence Prevention Task Force, said he made the track to offer a positive alternative to a gangster lifestyle and local resident Jo Jo praised its honest message. WRGB

- ➤ Vasuda Trehan, a UAlbany PhD candidate, is interning at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center where she is developing machine learning models to predict if exoplanets can support life (her work supports the proposed Habitable Worlds Observatory). She plans to continue working with NASA researchers after her internship as she aims to become the first Indian woman to land on the Moon. University at Albany
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Legal Aid Society said DOCCS did not follow a judge’s order to stop suspending the HALT Act that limits how long a person can be held in solitary confinement — a law that also requires inmates to have four hours out of their cells each day. The letter said DOCCS has not shared which prisons are affected or when the protections will return, and Legal Aid will seek a meeting or move forward with further legal steps if the order is not met.
