COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Municipalities in the Capital District are struggling to house stray and missing animals and are asking for help — local shelters like Mohawk Hudson are at capacity as cities consider new funding and facility plans. Rensselaer is moving ahead with a shelter project, Troy has set up temporary fixes, and Albany County is building a new facility expected to open by fall — efforts aimed at keeping animals safe and reducing lost pets.  WAMC

CRIME NEWS

  • Brooklyn man Tyliek Rivers, 24, was charged with multiple counts of robbery, assault, larceny, and weapon possession for a December 1, 2023 attack in Brunswick—he was arrested on July 18 and is now held without bail as the investigation continues.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Albany Police Department identified 23-year-old Daval Byramas—who was from Troy—as the fatal stabbing victim who died at Albany Memorial Hospital at 10:05 p.m. on Saturday after a severe wound near Third Street on Ontario; 33-year-old Kyle Crayon is accused of the stabbing and was arraigned in court on Sunday morning.  ABC NEWS 10
  • East Greenbush Police announced Monday that after investigating the May death of a one-year-old at a local daycare the cause was determined to be sudden unexplained death in childhood—no foul play is suspected and the child's name remains unreleased.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Jessica Saks, 48, a former chief attorney for children’s law offices in Schuyler and Chemung counties, was arrested in Albany City Court on June 18 after state police said she falsified receipts to secure $19,957 in reimbursements+ she pleaded not guilty to grand larceny and fraud and is set to return to court on August 28.  Times Union

  • Heavy metal band Pantera postponed its July 28 SPAC show after saying they needed time to grieve the loss of their friend Ozzy Osbourne — the rescheduled concert is set for September 9 at 7 p.m. with metal bands Amon Amarth and Shock Narcotic supporting.  ABC NEWS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul announced New York’s first bulk energy storage RFP on Monday—aiming to add one gigawatt of storage to improve grid reliability. NYSERDA will manage the program and eligible proposers must take the initial qualifying step by September 4.  WRGB
