COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albany officials are hosting a community meeting at 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church to address a surge in youth violence following a chaotic Fourth of July weekend when a 15-year-old was shot in the foot and a 17-year-old was fatally shot; Police Chief Brendan Cox will update on safety initiatives—local organizations are set to provide additional input on community resources.  WRGB

  • FP Movement, a women's activewear and lifestyle brand, will open at Stuyvesant Plaza on August 15 at 10 a.m.—the store takes over the former Penzeys Spices space near the USPS and 5th Corner Goods and Gifts. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Angel Ford, an assistant professor at CEHC, published a study in the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology that examines challenges for researchers in low- and middle-income countries—highlighting the need for more inclusive scholarly communication. Her work points to financial and infrastructural barriers that future global research partnerships will need to address.  University at Albany

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albany lawmakers passed the Anti-harassment Reporting Act to end anonymous child abuse reports and switch to confidential reporting—now it awaits Governor Hochul's approval. If signed, the law will require callers to provide their name and contact details while keeping their identity protected except by court order.  WRGB
  • H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill, was signed on July 4 and cuts taxes for the richest while costing New York $14 billion in healthcare funds—harming many Asian American families by reducing support for Medicaid, SNAP, and education. Local leaders warned that new fees and work rules will make it harder for children, seniors, and immigrants to get the help they need.  ABC NEWS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Albany Medical Center officials announced on Tuesday a $25 million emergency room expansion that will add nearly 7,000 square feet and 20 new patient care spaces—redesigning intake, triage and EMS areas to help reduce long wait times. The project, expected to finish by summer, will also include a new logistics center to better coordinate patient transfers among the network’s hospitals.  WAMC
