Good morning, Albany. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 5th of August.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Monday, the Office of Cannabis Management sent letters to 152 dispensaries to shut their doors and relocate after changing how it measures their proximity to schools, leaving owners confused despite assurances that approved locations would remain open. Osbert Orduna, CEO of The Cannabis Place Dispensary, said the rule change has destabilized the market—investors canceled meetings and concerns over breaking long-term leases add to the uncertainty.  ABC NEWS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA is offering a $1,000 reward for information on a pitbull mix named Petal—found in Hudson, where she weighed only 32 pounds instead of a healthy 65 pounds—as investigators work to arrest and convict anyone responsible for her severe neglect.  WRGB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Canada is now battling over 739 wildfires as smoke from these fires has led to air quality alerts and health advisories across Central and Eastern New York plus areas in Vermont and Massachusetts; officials warn that smoke levels may spike again ahead of a frontal boundary tonight and advise residents to limit outdoor activity if they experience symptoms.  WAMC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York’s redistricting process has been marked by a decade of legal battles and political changes as an independent commission and state lawmakers submitted plans starting in 2014. Voters rejected a 2021 ballot measure that would have changed the commission’s rules—leaving the state with alternating commission and legislature plans over several election cycles.  WRGB
  • Albany County invites community organizations and service providers to submit proposals for a new youth career readiness program that will begin this December and train high school students in job and life skills. The program will run eight in-person sessions and targets at-risk populations, ESL learners, and the unemployed (teaching proposals require at least three years' experience with Albany youth) with proposals due by August 15 (details available through the county Purchasing Division Office or Empire State Bid System).  WRGB
