BUSINESS NEWS

  • Construction for a new 163,000-square-foot Costco and a cancer treatment center next to Crossgates Mall is ongoing in Guilderland. Two concrete elevator shafts for the cancer center were built on Aug. 12—delays since work began in March have pushed the store's opening to an undetermined date while road and site improvements are set to begin in the next 30 to 60 days.  Times Union

CRIME NEWS

  • In Troy, the SNUG program uses social workers and outreach teams to fight gun violence by reaching young people in their own neighborhoods—participant Zaequan Anderson said the program helped him change his life and work two jobs.  ABC NEWS 10
  • A Schenectady man pleaded guilty to a drug charge on Tuesday—Keith Edmonds, 30, admitted he had 425 pills meant for sale and sold over 1,300 pills in the Capital Region between October and March, and he will be sentenced on December 11.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Keith Edmonds, 30, of Schenectady pleaded guilty Tuesday to possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute by admitting he held 425 pills on April 24 and sold over 1,300 pills from October to March—his sentencing on December 11 may bring 5 to 40 years in prison plus 4 years to life on parole, authorities said.  WRGB

  • The 1UpState video game developer expo will return to Albany on October 4 at the Albany Capital Center—where players, developers and industry professionals will gather for panels, exhibits and game demos. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. and give local gamers a chance to network and learn about the latest trends in gaming.  ABC NEWS 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Home prices in Albany have surged as builders face rising inflation and supply chain troubles—homes that once sold for around $150,000 now fetch over $300,000, according to Anthony Gucciardo of Gucciardo Real Estate Group. Builders are shifting to more affordable areas while high mortgage rates of 6.7% push buyers to favor existing properties over new construction.  WRGB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A New York State grant of $100,000 was awarded to United Way to expand Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library—providing free monthly books to children under five in several counties. The funding will boost enrollment and improve outreach for early literacy programs.  ABC NEWS 10

  • UAlbany now offers TimelyCare, a new online health service that gives 24/7 access to medical and mental health help to students whether they live on campus or not—this addition complements the school’s in-person services with on-demand counseling that averages a five minute wait time and free access without insurance.  University at Albany
