COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Capital Area received a $79,000 grant from the Taco Bell Foundation after customers rounded up their totals at local restaurants. The funds will boost facilities and educational programs at the clubs in Troy and Albany + support youth development in the community.  ABC NEWS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Watervliet man was critically injured when his motorcycle collided with a turning vehicle at 19th Street and 12th Avenue around 5:15 a.m. on Friday plus he was taken to Albany Medical Center while police continue investigating and the driver is reportedly cooperating.  ABC NEWS 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Free People Movement celebrated its grand opening at Stuyvesant Plaza yesterday — the only store of its kind in the Capital Region opened in the former Penzeys Spices space near the United States Postal Service and 5th Corner Goods & Gifts.  ABC NEWS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • A 34-year-old man was stabbed late Thursday night outside 45 Central Ave and taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital with serious wounds to his arms, and police are looking for the suspect—who reportedly knew the victim.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara introduced a bill that lets the Legislature review and possibly reverse new utility rate hikes before they become permanent—this bill would impose a 60-day waiting period on Public Service Commission decisions and cover rate increases approved over the past year. The measure aims to ease growing energy costs for New Yorkers following recent approvals for companies like National Grid.  Times Union

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ellis Medicine will cut services at Bellevue Woman’s Center starting August 22—shifting outpatient surgeries to Schenectady’s Ellis Hospital, and local advocates worry it will remove vital maternal care options. The changes also include laying off 14 nurses, forcing remaining staff to absorb extra duties amid concerns over a wider decline in maternal healthcare.  WAMC

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Herrington's Pumpkins opened its 9-acre sunflower field on Friday, August 15 at 768 Lee’s Crossing Rd for families and photographers. The farm charges $5 per person for three stems with extras at $1 each — it will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. until early September and does not allow pets.  WRGB
