CRIME NEWS

  • A Schenectady man, Michael Deberardinis, attempted to cash fraudulent checks at two local banks in 2024—he missed his court date and was later picked up on August 8 for outstanding warrants.  Spotlight News
  • Clifton Park woman Meikka Norman, 44, was arrested on August 14th and faces charges of grand larceny, forgery, and filing false instruments for allegedly embezzling over $50,000 from her former employer and providing false information to gain county benefits in Halfmoon — she remains in jail.  WRGB
  • Police and fire officials responded to an explosion on O’Neil Street in Troy on Sunday evening—reporting that two individuals were injured—and stated that there was no immediate danger to local residents.  WRGB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Students at UAlbany planted 200 pawpaw trees along South Pearl Street as part of a five-year effort to lower Albany’s air temperature by 10 degrees in response to rising heat from climate change — the project also trains workers and provides free fruit to residents in a food desert. The university received a $5 million grant from the U.S. Forest Service to support the work.  Times Union

  • Reports say the Albany FireWolves may move to Oshawa, Ontario for the 2025-26 season as trademark filings stir rumors. The team signed a lease to stay until 2026-27 and players say they want to remain in Albany despite challenges drawing fans.  Times Union
