COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 400 survivors, advocates, and government partners gathered in Albany this week for the New York State Office of Victim Services conference—The Power of Connection—to strengthen local support and improve access to programs like Resource Connect while addressing ongoing budget challenges. Organizers stressed that community involvement is key to reaching survivors who face barriers with law enforcement and other agencies.  NewsChannel 13
  • Capital Games will host a community fitness event at Sportime in Schenectady on Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will pay $25 to join athletic tournaments and fitness classes—featuring tennis, ping pong, pickleball, volleyball, basketball, yoga, Zumba, bootcamp and HIIT.  WRGB

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Albany Police executed a search warrant at a home on Thurlow Terrace and at a storage locker at a rental truck facility on Broadway, arresting Jason Bryant, aged 39, who faces multiple felony charges after police recovered crack cocaine and three loaded firearms—a .357 revolver, a 9mm ghost gun, and a .22 handgun.  WRGB
  • Shane Daley, 40, of Galway, New York, was arrested on August 13 at a federal courthouse in Albany and charged with cyberstalking after he reportedly left threatening voicemails to a family member of murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson; investigators later found a loaded shotgun, scattered beer cans, and other items at his home and an email in which he reportedly threatened ICE agents in Saratoga Springs.  WRGB

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GE Vernova announced it will invest $41 million in its Center for Excellence in Schenectady — a move to upgrade steam systems and generators and add 50 union jobs over the next two years. The project received support from New York's Excelsior Jobs Program and builds on $130 million already spent to boost gas power capacity.  WRGB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul announced $40.6M for a Youth Employment Program to reduce gun violence—by offering paid work and training for at-risk youth in 21 counties and supporting local social services. The program will run from September 1 to June 30 and serve at least 2,500 low-income youth.  WRGB
  • Crews are repairing a water main break on Homestead Street at the corner of Orchard Avenue and Homestead Street in Albany—forcing the water department to replace a broken valve and shut off service on Pleasant View Avenue. Affected homes on these streets remain without water while repairs continue.  ABC NEWS 10

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • First Columbia is moving ahead with a plan to revitalize downtown Albany by developing a nine story office building, a ground floor restaurant plus a four story residential building with 56 apartments on the vacant lot at 705 Broadway. The Albany County Planning Board will review the site plan amendment on August 21 and the city planning board will consider it in September.  WRGB
