CRIME NEWS

  • A temporary tobacco vendor at Schaghticoke Fair was cited by the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office for compliance violations after inspectors found missing certificates and a 'Minimum Age 21' sign — flavored nicotine vapes were seized pending a hearing as the owner cooperated.  WRGB
  • Albany police responded to a report of a person with a gun near Washington Avenue and Ontario Street at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday and arrested 36-year-old Sean Brown Jr.—he now faces charges for possessing a loaded handgun, cocaine, and obstructing governmental administration.  NewsChannel 13
  • Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to remove attorney Kevin A. Luibrand as counsel for Edward A. Leon—accused of starting the 2013 fire in Schenectady that killed a father and his three children—because his firm also represents an ATF agent in an unrelated case.  Times Union
  • Vladimir Ranguelov, owner of Bul Auto Sales, was arrested in Florida on Wednesday and faces three felony charges—organized fraud, obtaining a vehicle with fraudulent intent, and dealing in stolen property—he was released on bond and is set to be arraigned on Sept. 17.  Times Union
  • An Albany man was arrested early Sunday after officers chased him on foot near Washington Avenue and Ontario Street and found him with a loaded gun and cocaine — Sean Brown Jr., 36, now faces multiple felony charges including weapons and drug offenses.  ABC NEWS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, the Flotsam River Circus performed at Riverfront Park in Rensselaer — honoring the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal with acts such as sword swallowing and juggling — delighting the local audience. The troupe will continue its tour down the Hudson River — scheduled for upcoming stops in Hudson, Saugerties, Kingston, and Poughkeepsie — before its final show in New York City on Sept. 14.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amtrak unveiled its NextGen Acela trains that started service in New York City last week — the new trains offer 27% more seats and reach speeds up to 160 mph. High-speed rail in the Capital Region remains out of reach — local tracks lack the electric lines needed while CSX opposes the costly upgrades.  Times Union

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors at St. Peter’s Hospital performed the new LimFlow procedure in August 2024 to help retired firefighter Joe Berkery avoid another amputation after severe vascular disease threatened his remaining leg. Berkery said the minimally invasive treatment has changed his outlook—he now looks forward to returning to daily life.  NewsChannel 13

  • Racers 4 Autism is hosting the 4th Annual autism acceptance race on September 5 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway (2671 U.S. 9 in Malta) to raise funds for local autism support organizations including The Autism Society of the Greater Hudson Region and Bring on the Spectrum. The event will feature top racing classes and a new part-time team member with special needs following last year’s fundraising success of over $13,700.  WRGB
