- ➤ Cheick Diarra, 21, was sentenced to 6 ½ years in state prison for his role in a shootout at Madison Park on Oct. 19, 2024 — he pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon and must serve 5 years of post-release supervision. NewsChannel 13
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Returning for its 31st year, the Capital Apple and Wine Festival will welcome fall by featuring local apples, wineries, cideries, distilleries, and meaderies at the Columbia County Fairgrounds at 182 Hudson Avenue in Chatham—set for September 13 and 14. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. ABC NEWS 10
- ➤ The Hangar in Troy will host WAMM Fest 2025 on Sunday, September 14— the Capital Region’s first festival dedicated entirely to women-led music, with powerful harmonies, blazing guitars and a marketplace of women-owned businesses. WAMC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students at East Greenbush Central School District start the year with major upgrades from a $116 million capital project that broke ground in May and will roll out improvements for all seven schools over the next five years—Columbia High School now has a new roof and sports courts while elementary schools are set to receive new playgrounds, renovated libraries, extra classrooms, and air conditioning. - ➤ UAlbany senior Rohan Patrick Jr. created a vest that uses machine learning and vibrations to help visually impaired users navigate indoor environments as part of a 10-week summer research program at the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering. - ➤ The Albany County Black Caucus held a roundtable to address the housing crisis in the Capital Region by focusing on affordable housing, assistance programs, and the rehabilitation of condemned buildings—officials plan further discussions on rent and senior housing. Local leaders stressed that lowering costs and providing better support for new homebuyers will be key to retaining housing stability. WRGB
- ➤ Albany officials began a $12 million multi-year project on Wednesday to repair roadways connecting Empire State Plaza to I-787, reducing eastbound lanes from two to one—keeping routes 9 and 20 open on a temporary roadway. Westbound traffic was not affected and further lane diversions will be announced later this year. WRGB

- ➤ UAlbany field hockey junior transfer Pilar Lorenzini was named Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, September 3 after scoring key goals that led the Great Danes to two wins — she scored half of the team’s six goals with a game-winning strike over Hofstra on August 29 and the opener against Wagner on August 31.
