COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Albany Water Department is addressing a water main break on Maiden Lane affecting properties between North Pearl Street and Broadway—causing a loss of water service. Crews remain on site and will work to restore service as updates become available.  WRGB
  • A local activist urged Albany residents to monitor and record encounters with ICE amid ongoing federal raids and community efforts that began after asylum seekers arrived from relocation in May. She advised citizens to note details such as vehicle plate numbers and officer badges—steps designed to improve transparency in law enforcement actions.  WAMC
  • On Sept. 7, local police, firefighters, and community members held a benefit memorial stair climb at the Empire State Plaza to honor first responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001 — after climbing, they placed badges with photos and names on memorial bells.  Times Union

CRIME NEWS

  • A Malta man—69-year-old Eugene Willis—was arrested on August 28 for allegedly kicking a Labrador in his home on Knabner Road and now faces misdemeanor charges while the dogs are receiving treatment at a local shelter.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Thomas Murphy, 40, from Berne was arrested after he allegedly crashed his UTV into a pickup truck on Bradt Hollow Road on August 16—state police said his reckless driving caused over $10,000 in damage and led to charges of reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, DUI and other traffic violations while he was treated for serious injuries.  ABC NEWS 10

  • Nutcracker! Magical Christmas Ballet will return to Albany this holiday season with a performance at the Palace Theatre on December 2. Auditions for local children will be held on September 21 (in partnership with Premier Dance Performing Arts Center) to join the production.  WRGB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Councilman Owusu Anane praised the Albany Common Council's approval of a new ADU ordinance that legalizes small accessory dwelling units to help ease the city's housing shortage and offer affordable rental options. The ordinance is expected to support multigenerational families and give homeowners extra income+while preserving neighborhood character.  WRGB
