COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Juanita Nabors was named the 9th recipient of the Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service on Saturday at the Albany Riverfront Jazzfest at the Corning Preserve Boat Launch. Mayor Kathy Sheehan honored her decades of work with Albany youth and the preservation of the Rapp Road Historic District — a legacy of local service and commitment.  Times Union

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Regeneron donated $500,000 to Hudson Valley Community College to boost its science and biotech programs. The gift funds a new lab, expands STEM workforce training, and creates a space for college and high school students to gain hands-on experience — a step toward future science careers.  ABC NEWS 10
  • UAlbany will host its third Research & Entrepreneurship Week from Oct. 27-31 to show work in bio and nanotech, where faculty, students, researchers and industry leaders will lead daily programs to spark ideas and create jobs—boosting science and the local economy.  University at Albany

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul and the state Department of Environmental Conservation added 30 counties to the drought watch list, raising the total to 50 after a summer of high heat and little rain. Officials urged residents to conserve water by taking shorter showers, reusing water, and using brooms for cleaning—measures that may delay stricter restrictions if the dry conditions persist.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three roads in Troy are undergoing milling and paving as part of the city’s annual improvement plan this week and next week. Work on Pinewoods and Spring Avenues has already begun and will finish by week's end, while milling on Burden Avenue starts today and finishes by day's end—paving on all three will begin next week with local detours in place.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Office of Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found that the Department of Health improperly paid over $2.6 billion in Medicaid managed care premiums from July 2017 through October 2024 because it did not verify if members lived in the state. The audit recommends DOH use additional data—such as the National Change of Address report—to better identify non-residents and prevent future improper payments.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Today, the New York State Office of Cannabis Management announced efforts to fine and ban Lexachrom Laboratory for failing to maintain data integrity and report issues in time (a move following a recall of cannabis products with high pesticide levels). The ongoing investigation may lead to a three-year industry ban and a $2 million penalty.  ABC NEWS 10
  • The Albany County Legislature approved an $8,230 raise for Deputy Chairwoman Wanda Willingham during its meeting on Monday as local laws allowed a mid-term pay increase—her new annual salary is now $37,405, matching the majority leader's pay.  Times Union
  • The Capital District Transportation Authority is launching a public awareness campaign to boost fare compliance as rising fare evasion has hurt revenue and data collection—CDTA will use technology and supervisors to track nonpayment and support riders who pay their fare.  ABC NEWS 10
  • Troy Public Libraries proposed a new budget to keep the Lansingburgh branch open and enhance services, and residents will vote on Tuesday, September 16th from noon to 8 p.m. Executive Director Timothy Furgal said the plan boosts employee benefits and community programs — measures that protect a historic local resource.  ABC NEWS 10

  • Albany VegFest will return to the Capital Center on October 5 with over 60 local vendors offering vegan treats plus family-friendly cooking classes, guest speakers, and raffles. The event is free with a $10 suggested donation and will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  ABC NEWS 10

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Windy Hill Orchard-East, once home to Goold Orchards, is overgrown after five seasons and, though listed for over $2.2 million, is now under contract with no showings available this year—raising concerns among local apple picking fans. The future of the 100-plus-acre property remains uncertain as traditions may come to an end.  Times Union
